The 17th Annual YRALIS Champs

The 17th Annual YRALIS Championship Regatta was held on August 7th and 8th at American Yacht Club, Indian Harbor Yacht Club and Riverside Yacht Club.   A total of 82 boats competed over the weekend.  The Laser was the largest fleet with 15 competitors.  We had strong showings in the Ideal 18 fleet with 11 boats and an Etchells class with 8 boats.

The weather forecast for the weekend looked pretty bleak with light winds and rain.  It turned out the weathermen were wrong this time.  We had very little rain and after a short postponement on Saturday had reasonable winds.  The wind built from 5 knots at the first gun to 10 knots for the 4th race on Saturday.  Similar conditions prevailed on Sunday as we competed mostly in 6-8 knots.

PHRF boats sailed out of Riverside Yacht Club with 31 boats on the line in 5 divisions.  The larger boats were able to have one class of one-designs in the J-88 class with 5 racers.  Ken and Drew Hall in Nevermore finished in first with four bullets out of 7 races.  However, Coyote sailed by Bill Clemens and Chris Clarke put up a picket fence with 7 firsts to win best performance by a PHRF yacht.  Strange Brew had a first and third in the Navigator Spinnaker division to take the class followed by Jon Litt and Paul Dunay’s Camelot.  There was a tie in the Navigator non-Spinnaker class with Snow Goose sailed by Thomas Delany winning the tie-break over Christopher Schneider’s Rascal.  The PHRF 33-67 class saw Robert Fryer in El Diablo drop a 4th to finish with 6 points over 6 race scores kept.  Blue Fire took second place as Mark Parry sailed past Just Plain Nutz helmed by Norm and Cameron Dean.  The PHRF >67 saw Todd Aven in Thin Man edge out Jason Viseltear in Upsetter.   We hope everyone enjoyed the music, friends, food and awards at Riverside Yacht Club and will return for next year.
