Istvan Kopar- Thursday March 5, 2020 Manhasset Bay YC @7pm

Istvan Kopar, the US/Hungarian 2018 Golden Globe competitor who finished in 4th place on March 21st after 263 days at sea will speak to the YRAofLIS on Thursday March 5, 2020 at 7pm at Manhasset Bay YC.  The Golden Globe Race is an extraordinary challenge- circumnavigating the globe, singlehanded, non-stop and without assistance. That is just the beginning. Competitors' sail with similar boats and equipment to what Sir Robin Knox-Johnston used in the historic 1968/69 Sunday Times Golden Globe Yacht Race. Full keel, 32-36ft production boats designed prior to 1988, paper charts, sextants and wind-vanes are the equipment allowed on board, along with ham radios and a proficiency in Morse code.

Istvan's story is one of passion and perseverance and will keep the audience on the edge of their seats as Istvan recounts overcoming all that nature could throw at him as he circumnavigated the globe.

What many of you don't know is that Istvan has spent a lot of time in our waters. He is both a YRA-LIS member and an honorary member of Seawahnaka Corinthian YC. He is a former sailing master at SCYC, oversaw the junior sailing program there and the SCYC Boatyard helped Istvan prepare Puffin for her voyage.
