Steve Benjamin Rocks Larchmont Yacht Club*

Larchmont Yacht Club hosted a talk by Steve Benjamin on March 3rd, and the event was well-attended by members of LYC as well as by Etchells Fleet 1 members! Steve talked about growing up sailing and his early life, and then gave some insights into how he sails his Etchells as well as his other programs.

Steve approaches the sport with an intense and voracious appetite for testing, retesting and recording results of different experiments. Cataloging the rig settings, sea state and wind ranges, battens and sail twist and trim along with performance in Excel spreadsheets, he assesses what works and what doesn’t. Testing and extensive practice helps perfect his performance.

Steve remarked that he is really enjoying his Etchells campaigning, and he looks forward to participating more in the Class. He, along with International Etchells Class governor and Fleet 1 member Senet Bischoff and Michael Gavin, are actively supporting younger members in the Class, by offering teams with all members younger than 25 years old – as of 1 Jan 2017 -- the chance to sail Etchells at some of the US regattas. They plan to send one or two of these youth teams to the Gertrude Cup in Cowes at the end of July.

We look forward to seeing more of “Benj”, especially at the final event of the Atlantic Series during Larchmont Race Week. The Atlantic Series consists of:

  • June 2-4: US National Championship, NYYC, Newport, RI
  • June 24-25: Atlantic Coast Championship, Shelter Island YC, Shelter Island, NY
  • July 8-9: Narragansett Bay Championship, Sail Newport, Newport, RI
  • July 15-16: Long Island Sound Championship, Larchmont YC, Larchmont, NY

Scoring for the series will be based on the results from the US National Championship plus the best results from two of the three other events. The series promises to be well attended with great venues, superb events and easy logistics. Come and enjoy some of the most competitive racing with some really great people.
