Challenging Owners to Increase Youth Participation

NEWS ABOUT 2017 YOUTH CHALLENGE CUP (YCC)

Last year the YRA listed venues that would qualify for the Youth Challenge Cup. THAT HAS CHANGED!  In 2017, all YRA qualifying regattas will now be counted towards the YCC.

This year the process has been simplified
so there is very little for skippers/teams to do.

Steve Benjamin Rocks Larchmont Yacht Club*

Larchmont Yacht Club hosted a talk by Steve Benjamin on March 3rd, and the event was well-attended by members of LYC as well as by Etchells Fleet 1 members! Steve talked about growing up sailing and his early life, and then gave some insights into how he sails his Etchells as well as his other programs.

Steve approaches the sport with an intense and voracious appetite for testing, retesting and recording results of different experiments. Cataloging the rig settings, sea state and wind ranges, battens and sail twist and trim along with performance in Excel spreadsheets, he assesses what works and what doesn’t. Testing and extensive practice helps perfect his performance.

2017 YRA SEMINARS: RACING RULES & SAILING TACTICS

Posted in

Attention all sailboat racers:  The Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound takes pleasure in announcing the popular spring evening seminars on racing rules and sailing tactics.  The Racing Rules of Sailing have been updated for 2017 and if you want to get better, you have to know the rules.  If you want to win, you have to have a clear picture of how the rules and the tactics play out on the race course.

Our invited speakers include Dave Perry, rules guru extraordinaire and author of numerous books on the racing rules, Charlie “Butch” Ulmer, founder of UK sailmakers and a preeminent PRO, and Bill Gladstone, creator and director of the North U seminars.

These Seminars are open to all sailors.  Junior sailors are especially encouraged to attend. Skippers, please ask your crews to attend and invite them to join the YRA.

Seminar fees:  YRALIS members - $25; non-members - $40;  junior sailors with a paid adult - complementary.

YOU MUST BE A 2017 YRA MEMBER and BE LOGGED INTO YOUR ACCOUNT TO GET THE $25 MEMBER ENTRY FEE.

Each evening begins with a cash bar at 7:00, the presentation, with time for questions and answers, is from 7:30 to 9:30. The cash bar will open again following the presentation. Space is limited, so please sign up early at yralis.org

Dinner reservations may be made at each club on an individual basis - please call the club in advance. PLEASE NOTE: Norwalk YC does not have a bar or a kitchen so dinner is not available there.  For further information, call the YRA Office at 516-767-9240.
